Starbucks Bike to Work Day: DIY Community Stations
This year, Cascade Bicycle Club is opening up hosting opportunities to any and all Bike to Work Day participants with our new DIY (do-it-yourself) Community Station. Host a station in your neighborhood or outside your workplace, and support fellow cyclists on Starbucks Bike to Work Day morning. You bring the enthusiasm and a sense of community.
The new Do-It-Yourself Community Stations will appear on a map with DIY station listings.
We have provided you with a basic DIY toolkit which includes:
- Step by Step Instructions
- Sample Solicitation Letter (MS Word Doc)
- Downloadable Poster and Flyer
- The following items available from Cascade Bicycle Club, (M-F, 9 am-5 pm only. One evening materials pick-up date is TBD).
- Bike Maps
- Commute Program Booklets
- Safety materials
We have some basic guidelines for the DIY Stations you need to check out before you get started. Remember, this should be fun. Your creativity and excitement will make this successful. Happy Bike Month.
Step by Step Guidelines
- Pick a spot. When picking a spot remember that you want to be somewhere where you see cyclists. If you never see bikers at a particular spot you probably still won’t see them on Bike to Work Day. Pick a spot where you can set up that doesn’t block the sidewalk or put you dangerously out in traffic. Additionally you want to make sure cyclists can pull over safely to visit your station.
- Let Cascade Bicycle Club know where and what time your station will be open so we can add it to our dynamic online calendar.
- Come up with some fun ideas on how to make your booth engaging. Have fun with it! Some sample ideas are below.
- Ask a local store to donate some cupcakes.
- Have a bike related game.
- Have a flag
- Outreach. We will let people know where you are via our website but the best way to get people to your stop is for you to let people know. Get your neighbors out. You can flyer around your neighborhood or let your neighborhood blog know. The more people you from your area the more fun your event will be.
In addition to website promotion, Cascade Bicycle Club will supply downloadable 11 x 17 Bike to Work Day Posters and 8 1/2 x 11, 2-up Flyers. You can customize these items with your station address, sponsor name and print up as needed to promote within your community/workplace
- Host your station! May 21 is National Bike to Work Day! Get out and have fun. Remember to keep track of how many people come by your station.
You can also pick up Bicycle maps, safety handouts and commute program booklets from the Club office for distribution.
- Let us know how it went. We want to know if you had a good time and if people came by.
Rules
- You cannot sell anything.
- No alcohol onsite.
- Your station can’t block automobile, bicycle, or pedestrian traffic.
- Cyclists need to be able to pull over safely to your station.
